Abdullah Hussain was born on 25th March 1920 in Sungai Limau Dalam, Yan, Kedah. Abdullah has written poetry and literary criticism, but his major contributions are short stories, novels and translated works. Among the published novels are Berenang di Lautan Madu, Kuala Lumpur Kita Punya, Imam and Interlok. His short stories collection are Kota ke Kota, Sebuah Pekan Bernama Semporna and Cahaya Langit. He won first prize in the Peraduan Mengarang Cerpen Berunsur Islam (1997) and a consolation prize in the Esso-Gapena Sayembara Cerpen (1979).
His highest achievement in writing came when the novel Imam (1995) won first prize in the Utusan-Public Bank 1992/94 Hadiah Novel Nasional literary competition. He won a consolation prize in the Peraduan Novel Sepuluh Tahun Merdeka (1967) for Interlok. His numerous contributions had earned him the S.E.A. Write Award (1981), the title Darjah Dato’ Setia Diraja Kedah (1996) and the title of The 8th National Laurette (Anugerah Sasterawan Negara ke-8) in 1996.

Aminah Mokhtar was born on the 4th October 1959 in Muar, Johor. After her secondary education, she was offered to work as a trainee nurse. She later continued her her study in Nursing, gaining a Diploma in Science of Nursing. She is now a trained nurse at the Maternity Ward, Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.
She has produced an amount of novels; Sekuntum Bunga Kasih, Diari Seorang Jururawat, Iman Markisa, Bukan Dosa Bangsaku, Dominasi Tebrau, and Semakin Dekat. She has also produced 100 drama scripts for Radio 1, RTM and several scripts for 5 on-stage dramas. She has won the Sayembara VII Esso-Gapena (Second Place, 1988), Hadiah Cerpen Perpaduan for Semarak (1995), Hadiah Sastera Utusan-Public Bank, Hadiah Sastera Darul Takzim, Anugerah Kreatif PPUM (1999), Anugerah Sastera Perdana for Gerhana Manusia, Hadiah Sako for Imam Markisa (Third Place), and Peraduan Menulis Novel Alaf Baru (First Prize) for Dominasi Tebrau in 2001.

Dato’ Dr. Anuar bin Haji Rethwan or Mohd Anwar Ridhwan was born in Sabak Bernam, Selangor on the 5th of August 1949. He is widely known Malaysian novelist, poet and writer; specializing in Malay Literature. He graduated from Universiti Malaya with a Bachelor of Arts in 1973, then Master of Arts in 1983 and finally his PhD in 1998. He pursued his career in Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) until resignation in 2005 as Publishing Director of DBP.
His first novel, Hari-hari Terakhir Seorang Seniman won the Yayasan Sabah-GAPENA Novel Prize of 1979 (First Prize). Arus (1985) won the Malaysian Literary Prize of 1984/1985. Among his famous short stories are Perjalanan Terakhir (1971), Dunia adalah Sebuah Apartmen (1973), Sesudah Perang (1976) and Dari Kiev ke Moskova (1992). His Naratif Ogonshoto won the Anugerah Sastera Perdana Malaysia 2000/2001. He received the title of The 10th Natonal Laurette (Anugerah Sasterawan Negara ke-10) on 20th August 2009.

Mohd Faizal Musa or AKA Faizal Tehrani was born on 7th August 1974 at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. He graduated from University of Malaya with a Bachelor Degree in Islamic Law (Political). Then, he worked as a fellow at Universiti Sains Malaysia. He achieved a Master Degree in Literature and currently pursuing his PhD in Literature at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He wrote scripts for drama, novels and short stories. His drama scripts are Rintih Chicago, Angin Madinah and MISI. His published novels include Cinta Hari-hari Rusuhan, Perempuan Politikus Melayu and Jendela Berlangsir Hujan. His collection of short stories are Anastasia, Opah, Malam Ini and Pemberontakan Kedua. Faizal represented Malaysia in Program Penataran Sastera organized by Council of South East Asia Literature at Jakarta and Bogor in 1999. Among his achievements in writing competition are the Prime Literature Prize (1996/97), Islamic Element Literature Prize organized by Islamic Education Foundation of Malaysia and DBP, Utusan Malaysia-Public Bank Literature Prize (1994 and 1996), Dewan Siswa-Bank Rakyat Literature Prize (1994) and Work of Art Literature Prize (1997). Presently, he is a lecturer at National Arts, Culture and Heritage Academy (ASWARA) Kuala Lumpur.

Hamdan Yahya was born on 29th October 1947 in Sungkai, Perak. He recieved his Bachelor of Literature (Hons.) from University of Malaya (1974) and Masters in Literature in from University of Birmingham (1992). He used to work as a teacher from 1968-1974, a lecturer from 1974-1976, He had worked in Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka for nearly 30 years.

HATTA AZAD KHAN
Hatta Azad Khan was born in 1952. He began writing essays, critics, radio and stage dramas since his secondary school days. He then focused on stage dramas, especially when he was a student in Universiti Sains Malaysia. Hatta won many awards, including the Malay Literary Award (1984), The Esso-Gapena 1 Drama Award (1986), and the Malaysian Film Festival (1991) for the Best Screenplay. Hatta was awarded the S.E.A. Write Award in 2008. Presently, Hatta is a professor at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam.

Born in Johor Bahru in the year 1954, Ismail Kassan is a prolific drama writer. His involvement in writing and theatre direction started in 1972. His very first script entitled Fajar Merah di Teluk Ketapang was performed on-stage under his direction in Johor Bahru in 1972. He directed more than 10 on-stage theatre performances besides producing almost 30 scripts for on-stage drama performance.
A lot of his works were published and won prizes under Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), Ministry of Arts and Culture, Istana Budaya, GAPENA and others. In 2003, his drama production entitled Gelanggang Tok Wali; containing 4 of his drama works under DBP won Hadiah Sastera Perdana 2002/2003 for the book (Drama) category. In 2008, two of his scripts won first (Kembang Cempakasari) and second prize (Bukan Dejavu) in Sayembara Penulisan Skrip Drama Pentas in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee for DBP (2007). He also produced children dramas like Nadim, Tembang Sang Puyoh and Alang Bistari (puppet theatre) that was staged in Kuala Lumpur (2001), Kuching (2001) and the Asia-Europe Puppet Festival, Bangkok, Thailand (2002). Nadim won the consolation prize in the Children Drama Scriptwriting Competition organized by Istana Budaya.

Jamaluddin D. or Jamaluddin bin Darus, was born on 19th July 1946 in Kulim, Kedah. Once a reporter and translator, he is currently a facilitator for Program Penghayatan Sastera dan Budaya under the National Service Training Program; a sponsored program by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP). Among his achievements in poetry are, Hadiah Sastera Utusan Melayu/Public Bank (1989, 1992 and 1999), Hadiah Sastera Perdana Malaysia 2002-2003 and Hadiah Pertama Sayembara Mengarang in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee for DBP (2007).

LIM KIM HUI
Lim Kim Hui was born in Ayer Hitam, Kedah. He obtained a BA with distinction in Descriptive and Creative Writing, University of Malaya in 1988. He continued his Master of Arts, specializing in Informal Logic/Critical Thinking in 1994. His PhD degree was obtained from University of Hamburg, with the dissertation entitled Budi as the Malay Mind: A Philosophical Study of Malay Ways of Reasoning and Emotion in Peribahasa.
He started writing in 1987 and his literary works have been published in various media. So far, Lim has published various books, namely Kembara Fikir di Tanah Senja (anthology of poems, 2007), Globalisasi Media dan Budaya: Antara Hegemoni Barat dengan Kebangkitan Asia (co-authored with Har Wai Mun, 2007), and Pemikiran Retorik Barat: Sebuah Pengantar Sejarah (2007). He has also produced two translated books entitled Teori Kesusasteraan Cina (1995) and Sejarah Ringkas Falsafah Cina (2006). His selected creative works, especially poems have also been published in books such as Kasih Sayang (1988), Menara 2 (1989), Surat dari Kuala Lumpur (1990), Notelun Hidup (1991), Suara Anak Merdeka (1992), Di Dunia Permata (1993), Tanpa Mengira Warna (1993), Sungai Kasih (1994), Gema Membelah Gema II (1994), Suara Kemanusiaan (1994), Puyan Jelepek (1995), and ASEANO (1995).
He participated in the Second ASEAN Writers Conference/Workshop (Poetry) in Manila, 1995. He had won Hadiah Utusan Melayu-Public Bank (Special Mentioned) for non-Malay poems in 1987, 1989, 1993 and 1994, Malayan Banking-DBP II Short Story Appreciation Prize, Peace Poetry Competition Prize (1991), Shapadu-Gapena National Poetry Competition Prize (1992) and Bosnia Poetry Writing Contest (1994). Lim is currently a Research Fellow at Institute of Occidental Studies in Univeristi Kebangsaan Malaysia.

MOHD. ZARIAT ABDUL RANI
Mohd. Zariat Abdul Rani (PhD) is a senior lecturer at the Department of Malay Language, Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia. His area of specialization is modern Malay literature. He obtained his PhD from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2004. His research interests include literary theories and criticisms, Islamic literature and rhetoric in fictions. He publishes his works extensively in various academic journals; both in Malay and English. In 2008, he was awarded the Nippon Foundation Fellowship for Asian Public Intellectuals; a Fellowships Program to carry out research on Indonesian literature. Under this program, he was invited as the Visiting Research Fellow at the Department of Literature, Faculty of Humanities, University of Indonesia.

MUHAMMAD LUTFI ISHAK
Muhammad Lutfi Ishak was born on 27th January 1980 in Kampung Ulu Bakai, Kulim, Kedah. Currently a teacher, he started writing from 1999. A winner of Minggu Penulis Remaja 2000, he had produced short stories, poems and essays. Two of his short stories, Musang and Biawak, were choosen in the Antologi Karyawan Sasterawan 2005; an anthology that compiles the best works from new writers under 40. In 2002, he published his short stories together with Anjan Ahzana and Jimadieshah Othman in Myths of American Sperms. He had won Hadiah Sastera Tunas Cipta, Hadiah Sastera Sarina, and Hadiah Sastera Utusan Malaysia-Exxon Mobil. Some of his poems had been translated into Engliah and Thai.

Born in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan on 23rd December 1957, Naapie Mat had produced poems, essays, and novels. His first compilation fo poems, Dongeng Purba (1993) was published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP). He obtained the PESISIR Award (1985), Hadiah Sastera Utusan-Public Bank (1985, 1995), and Hadiah Penulis Rencana Gerakan Cintailah Bahasa Kita (1991, 1992) for his poems. in 1996, Naapie was given the opportunity to represent Malaysia in the World Poetry Recitation Kuala Lumpur. Presently, he is an activist under Kelab Sastera DBP, and a lecturer at Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris.

NISAH HAJI HARON
Born in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan on 20th April 1973, Nisah Haji Haron has been writing as a hobby since 1988. Her first short story was published in Dewan Siswa (September 1990). She wrote forty short stories, five novels, essays and a few poems, and published in local literary magazines and newspapers. Nisah Haji Haron received her legal education from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, graduated in 1997. She did her practise as an advocate and solicitor as well as a Syarie counsel for eight years, before becoming a full-time writer in 2006. He works have gained many awards, including Hadiah Sastera Perdana Malaysia and Hadiah Sastera Kumpulan Utusan. She recently won first place in Hadiah Sastera Berunsur Islam with her short story, Aset Istiqamah.

Noriah Taslim, Dr, is a noted critic of Malay literature. She is well-known in the field of traditional Malay literature. Since her M.A. level, her inclination for this field began to show prominence. Many of Noriah’s title cover traditional literature, among them are Teori dan Kritikan Sastera Tradisional (1993), Hikayat Seri Rama Versi Rakyat: Teks dan Proses Lisan (2002), Dunia Sahibulhikayat (2005) and Syair Raja Muda Perlis: Teks dan Genealogi (2006). Presently, Dr. Noriah Taslim is Associate Professor at the School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia.

PUTERI ROSLINA ABDUL WAHID
Puteri Roslina Abdul Wahid was born on 10th March 1961 in Perak. She is currently residing as the Head of Research Department at the Academy of Malay Studies, University of Malaya. She had been a lecturer at Universiti Putra Malaysia, a language planning officer at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. She received her Master in Applied Linguistic and PhD in Psycholinguistics. Puteri Roslina contributes many articles related to translation, terminology, teaching and learning of language, and psycholinguistics. Bahasa Antara is one of her published books in psycholinguistics.

RAHIMAH HAJI A. HAMID
Rahimah Haji A. Hamid was born in Alor Setar, Kedah Darul Aman, but most of her primary and secondary school days were spent in Bentong and Raub, Pahang Darul Makmur. She attended the course entitled ‘Sijil Penulisan Kreatif’ at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) between 1991-1992, and obtained a Bachelor Degree in literature studies in 1996. After that, she worked as Language Planning Officer at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP). When she was in DBP, she received a scholarship offer from USM to continue her master’s degree and PhD. She later obtained a master’s degree in Creative Writing in 2000. In 2001, she was sent by USM to continue her studies at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London and obtained her PhD in Comparative Literature in 2004. She is currently a senior lecturer at the Literary Studies Division, Centre of Social Science Studies, USM.

Rahman attended an education course at Sultan Idris Teacher Training College (now Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris). He graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia with a Bachelor Degree and a Master in Literature. In 1991, he attended an international writing course at Iowa University. His collection of short stories are Ratu Adi, Gangguan and Puteri Tawanan. His works in poetry include Hamparan Kuning, Kesan Junjungan, and Melati dan Bahang. His novels are Norhana, Gelora Musim Muda, Mufarakah, Tirai Tokoh, Takungan Hajat and Suluh Peraba. His research on Malay Literature include Di Sekitar Sastera dan Kritikan, Persediaan Menulis Sajak and Memahami Gaya Bahasa. He achieved first prize in Writing on Literature Essay Competition among Teachers College (1971), Writing Literature Prize (1976), Prize in Essay/Literature Critics (1977) from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and Malaysian Literature Prize in 1982/1983 and 1986/1987. Being a prolific writer, he was awarded the S.E.A. Write Award in 2007. Presently, he is a professor in Media Studies, University of Malaya.

Salinah Jaafar was born on 24th December 1968. She graduated from University of Malaya with a Bachelor Degree, Master in Literature (Malay Language) and PhD in Lexicology. Presently, she is a Senior Lecturer at Malay Linguistic Department, Academy of Malay Studies, University of Malaya. S.M. Zakir or Syed Mohd Zakir bin Syed Othman is the General Secretary of Persatuan Penulis Nasional Malaysia (PENA). He was born on 4th February 1969 in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. He is a writer on literary, cultural, theatre, film, and current issues of the society. He started writing in 1990. Untill now, he has received a lot of awards on writing in multiple fields, especially in literature. Among his national literary awards, he obtained Hadiah Sastera Perdana in the short story (Book) category for Merengkuh Langit (1994/1995) and Anugerah Sastera Kelantan in the short story (Book) category for Sekuntum Kembang di Sayap Jibril. Among other literary awards for short stories, poems and essays are Hadiah Sastera Perdana Malaysia, Hadiah Sastera Kumpulan Utusan, Hadiah Sastera Utusan-ExxonMobil, Hadiah Sastera DBP-Maybank, Hadiah Sastera 100 tahun Kuala Lumpur DBP-DBKL, Hadiah Formula Malaysia, Anugerah Sastera Negeri Kelantan and Anugerah Gaffim.

Tengku Nasaruddin Said Effendy or popularly known as Pak Tenas or Dr. Tenas Effendy was born on 9th November 1936 at Dusun Tanjung Malim, Desa Kuala Panduk, Pelalawan, Indonesia. He was involved in writing and literary activities while still in school at Sekolah Guru B (SG B) at Bengkalis and Padang. In 1960, he continued his writing and wrote many books and seminar proposals on Malay culture. His published books are Upacara Tepung Tawar, Khazanah Pantun Adat Melayu, Kumpulan Ungkapan Melayu Riau and Syair Nasib Melayu. Dr. Tenas’ collections in this field are Dara dalam Budaya Melayu, Pemangkaian Ungkapan dalam Upacara Perkahwinan Orang Melayu, Ringkas Kisah Cik Puan Sri Bunian and Pengembangan Kebudayaan dan Wisata. His contributions in art are fully recognized when he received the title Adat Sri Budaya Junjungan Negeri from Sri Mahkota Setia Negeri Bengkalis, Anugerah Sagang (1997) and Doktor Honoris Causa (Literature) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

TENGKU INTAN MARLINA TENGKU MOHD ALI
Tengku Intan Marlina Tengku Mohd Ali was born on 17th September 1971. She is a lecturer at Academy of Malay Studies in University of Malaya since 2007. Tengku Intan graduated from the University of Malaya with a Master in Literature (1996) and a Master in Malay Language Study (2000). Then, she further her study at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and obtained her PhD in Malay Literature (2006). Her published works include Seni Untuk Seni Fahaman Hamzah, Pertentangan Nilai dan Psikologi, Orang Tua di Kaki Gunung, and Semiotik Peirce dan Morris: Pengenalan Kaedah Analisis Karya Sastera in a Journal for Malay Language Study published by Academic Malay Language, University of Malaya. She also wrote Hari-hari Terakhir Seorang Seniman: Indeksikal Dunia Nyata Lipur Lara dan Pendudukan Jepun di Tanah Melayu in Jurnal Beringin, published by National Arts, Culture and Heritage Academy, Kuala Lumpur.
